Man in court on terror charges

A man has appeared in court charged with terror offences after being arrested at a railway station.

Neil Lewington, 43, of Church End Lane, Tilehurst, Reading, has been charged with 11 offences, 10 of which fall under the Terrorism Act and the other under the Explosives Act.

One charge includes travelling from Reading in Berkshire to Lowestoft in Suffolk with two improvised explosive devices.

He was arrested after police found a suspected explosive device when they searched a man at Lowestoft railway station on October 30.

Lewington spoke only to confirm his name and address when he appeared before the City of Westminster magistrates' court.

He was remanded to appear at the Central Criminal Court for a preliminary hearing on November 28.

Lewington is accused of being in possession of a number of articles connected with the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism contrary to the Terrorism Acts 2000 and 2006.

These included two improvised explosive devices, seven timers, four containers of sodium chlorate weed killer, three tennis balls and a number of fire lighters.

He is also accused of being in possession of the Waffen SS UK members' handbook, several notebooks containing drawings and handwritten notes, and a book called Counter Bomb.

He is also charged with having an explosive substance with intent to endanger life or cause serious injury to property.
