Man in court over Goa girl's death

Samson D'Souza was detained after witnesses alleged that they saw him raping 15-year-old Scarlett Keeling on the beach in the resort of Anjuna on February 18.
Goa police inspector Kisham Kumar said that they were satisfied D'Souza was involved in the rape, but no formal charge had yet been brought against him.
"As far as the murder is concerned, we are still investigating," he said. Once the investigation into the offences was over "we will prepare a charge sheet", he added.
He said D'Souza was remanded in police custody for 14 days following a short court appearance.
Scarlett Keeling's mother, Fiona MacKeown, said she was not satisfied with the way the investigation into her daughter's death was being conducted. Mrs MacKeown, from Bideford, Devon, said she wanted the case to be taken over by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), India's investigation agency.
"I am not confident that they have got the right person, I think that they are just making a public show, to be honest," Ms MacKeown, speaking from Goa, told BBC Breakfast. She added: "We have had many reports that they have done this before with other cases for a start-off. I just think they are going to continue to try to cover themselves up - their mistakes."
Ms MacKeown continued: "We have just issued a letter to the Chief Minister of Goa, telling them that we are not happy and we want the CBI to get involved, the Central Bureau of Investigation to come in and take over the case. Only then will I be satisfied that somebody from outside the area is dealing with this case and I would want them to deal with the police as well, not just the people that have done this to Scarlett."
Inspector Kumar earlier said: "This man was seen with the girl near to where her dead body was found. It was evidently clear this man was raping her. We have sufficient evidence to show this man was having sex with the girl in the early hours of February 18. We have established that he was raping her."
The policeman added that Indian officers were now working on a murder investigation. "This part of the investigation is still going on," he said.
