Man in court over pensioner murder

A man is appearing in court charged with the murder of an elderly widow.

Joan Charlton, 85, was found dead at her home in West Parade, Hull, on Thursday and detectives say she had suffered a "sustained and brutal attack" in which every bone in her face was broken.

Humberside Police said on Monday night that Robert Michael Sanders, 20, from Hull, had been charged with Mrs Charlton's murder.

He was kept in custody overnight and is to face Hull Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

A member of the public raised the alarm on Thursday afternoon and Mrs Charlton's body was found in the terraced house where she lived alone.
