Man in court over stabbing death

A man appeared in court charged with the murder of a 17-year-old boy who was stabbed in the neck.

Steven Braithwaite, 30, of no fixed address, is accused of murdering Nilanthan Murddi on August 16 in Croydon.

The case was adjourned until November 27, when Braithwaite will appear at the Central Criminal Court.

Braithwaite spoke only to confirm his name and to say he understood the charge at Sutton Magistrates Court. He was remanded in custody.

Nilanthan died from a single stab wound to the neck during an incident in south London early on Saturday morning.

He was taken to Croydon's Mayday Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Nilanthan, who lived in the New Addington area of Croydon, had been studying for his A-levels but left school to help in the family business, where he worked as a waiter.
