Man in court over student murders

A 33-year-old man has appeared in court accused of the double murder of French students Gabriel Ferez and Laurent Bonomo.

The pair, both 23, were found bound and stabbed to death in a bedsit in New Cross, south-east London, that had been set alight.

Unemployed Nigel Farmer, of no fixed address, appeared at Greenwich Magistrates' Court charged with their murder.

Farmer, who is also accused of arson and attempting to pervert the course of justice, was remanded in custody until October 16 when he will appear at the Old Bailey.

During the brief hearing, Farmer spoke only to confirm his name and age, and also that he had no fixed address.

He is charged with the double murder of Ferez and Bonomo on June 29, and also with arson and attempting to pervert the course of justice, on the same date.

Wearing a white sweatshirt and with a shaven head, he stood in the dock flanked by two security guards.

No application for bail was made and chairman of the bench Phil Rogers ordered that Farmer be remanded in custody until his next appearance in court, at the Old Bailey on October 16.
