Andrew Dixon, 46, shot Neil Willett in the face after seeing him kiss his wife Shirley as they returned to her home, Lincoln Crown Court heard.
The former Grenadier Guard, of Parsons Lane, Alford, Lincolnshire, admitted attempted murder and possessing a gun in a public place.
The court heard that Mr Willett, 42, was a family friend of the Dixons. Mr Willett, his wife Sarah and their two children often went on holiday with the Dixon family before he started the affair with Mrs Dixon in 2004.
When her husband found out that same year, Mrs Dixon, 43, returned to him but then started seeing Mr Willett again in 2008.
On June 20 last year, the night before the shooting, she told Dixon that she was continuing her relationship with Mr Willett.
The court heard that the former sergeant, who served in Belize and Northern Ireland, went out shooting foxes that night but later broke in to the cottage his wife was renting in the remote Lincolnshire village of South Ormsby.
Mr Willett returned to the house with Mrs Dixon in his Ford Mondeo. It was then that Dixon spotted the couple kissing.
He went to pull his estranged wife out of the way of the car as she tried to shield Mr Willett before blasting him in the face from close range with his Beretta shotgun.
Jailing Dixon for 17 years, Mr Justice Butterfield described the shooting as a terrible crime.
