Man jailed over attempted murder

A gunman has been jailed for 15 years for his part in an "assassination" shooting which left a man wheelchair bound for life.

Leon Russell, 24, was convicted at the Old Bailey of attempted murder after his former childhood friend was blasted at least 10 times - including twice in the head.

The victim's intestines were reportedly "blown away", he lost many of his teeth and his spine was shattered by five shots after an attack by two gunmen in Kennington, south London in September last year.

Officers are still hunting the second attacker named as Shaun Sutton, 26, who police say should not be approached.

Detective Sergeant Paul Chapman, leading the investigation, said about the victim: "He was shot numerous times, a minimum of two to the head and the rest all over his body and limbs.

"He's paralysed for the rest of his life and is wheelchair bound - the judge summed it up as an "attempted assassination".

Russell was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment with the judge stating he must serve a minimum of seven-and-a-half years.

DS Chapman added: "I believe Shaun Sutton has access to firearms and is a highly dangerous man and anyone who sees Sutton should not approach him but dial 999 immediately."

Sutton used to live in the Streatham area, south London.

He is described by police as white, medium build, with dark hair, usually cut short, and blue eyes.
