Man killed in bus crash

The air ambulance flew a number of the injured to hospital after the collision on the A379 in Modbury, Devon.

An ambulance service spokesman said the driver of the van, who has not been identified, died at the scene.

A police spokesman said the extent of the injuries to the six bus passengers was not yet known.

He said: "Up to six people travelling on the bus have been injured. The road has been closed and diversions are being put in place.

A police spokesman said 16 people from the bus were taken to hospital but none suffered serious injuries in the crash at 11.30am on Wednesday.

Eight were taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth - two flown by air ambulance and six, described as "walking wounded", by land ambulance.

Eight other passengers were taken to Kingsbridge Hospital to be checked and to wait for alternative transport.

Ambulance staff at the scene said the driver of the van is believed to be a man in his 50s.

The bus was First Devon and Cornwall's 93 service which runs between Plymouth, Kingsbridge and Dartmouth.
