The victim, believed to be in his thirties, was stabbed on Chalton Street near Euston Station in London at 5.56pm. He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to a West London hospital, where he died at 7.50pm.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said that they were awaiting formal identification and confirmation that next of kin had been informed. He added that a post-mortem is due to be scheduled.
Officers are keeping an open mind as to the motive of the attack and no arrests have been made at present.
Police have cordoned off a large section of Chalton Street as well as nearby Ossulston Street and have constructed a forensics tent outside the New Horizon Youth Centre on Chalton Street.
A large number of police were at the scene including a group of police wearing protective head gear, vests and carrying shields.
The television presenter Jon Snow, who is chair of the New Horizon Youth Centre, a hostel for homeless teenagers, arrived at the scene and said he was there to give his support to staff and clients.
"I heard about it and came down," he said. "The workers and clients are stuck inside."
He said he believed the incident had taken place on the street outside the centre.
