Man on gun charge over girl's death

A man is due to appear in court charged with possessing the gun used to kill a 12-year-old girl who was shot accidentally by her brother.

Kertman Grant, 41, of Norman Grove, Longsight, Manchester, will appear before city magistrates charged with possessing a prohibited weapon and ammunition.

The charges follow the death of Kamilah Peniston, of Gorton, Manchester, who was shot dead by her brother, Kasha, 17, while he was "messing around" with the firearm at their home on April 30 this year.

On Wednesday, Kasha was given a two-year sentence in a young offenders' institution for her manslaughter, while their mother, 33-year-old Natasha Peniston, was jailed for three years for possession of the gun.

Kasha was playing with the .38 snub-nosed revolver at the family home but had pushed out the cylinder, which holds the bullets, so they could not be fired.

Somehow the cylinder slipped back into place - and Kasha pulled the trigger while holding the gun to his sister's forehead.

A single bullet hit the girl as she lay on the settee. Kamilah was left brain dead and died in hospital the next day with her mother at her bedside.

Both Kasha and his mother faced longer mandatory sentences, which were reduced by the judge because of the "exceptional circumstances" of the case.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "A man has been charged with possessing the gun that killed 12-year-old Kamilah Peniston.

"Detectives investigating her death have charged Kertman Grant with the possession of a prohibited weapon and ammunition, under Section 1 of the Firearms Act.
