The victim, a 35-year-old black man from west London, was shot dead outside Club Red in Cable Street, Limehouse, east London, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
A man in his 20s was arrested at 7pm on Sunday when he voluntarily attended a south London police station. He remains in custody, where he is due to be questioned by detectives from Operation Trident, which investigates gun crime among young black people.
Scotland Yard said the victim was believed to have been in the club and the incident that led to his death happened outside.
Clubbers who saw what happened were urged to come forward.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and a post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds to the head and neck.
Local residents said they were woken by police sirens in the early hours.
Shop worker Gloria Antin, 45, said: "There was a helicopter and people shouting and screaming at about 4 o'clock. There were huge crowds of people here outside the nightclub.
"It's pretty terrifying but I'm not surprised. Every weekend we get trouble with people drinking outside the club."
