Man quizzed over student murders

A man arrested in connection with the savage murder of two French students was being interviewed by police, having been released from hospital.

The 33-year-old walked into a south London police station on Monday and was arrested over the deaths of Gabriel Ferez and Laurent Bonomo.

He was taken under police guard to a hospital to receive treatment for burns but returned to a police station later that day, police confirmed.

The badly burned bodies of the two 23-year-olds were found after an explosion at a rented bedsit in south east London nine days ago. Investigators found they had been bound, gagged and tortured before petrol or a similar inflammable liquid was splashed on and around their bodies.

Police said a strong smell of accelerant remained at the property hours after the blaze had been put out by firefighters.

Sources close to the investigation insisted that officers still believe more than one person could have been involved in the prolonged attack.

Forensic searches at the severely damaged ground-floor property in Sterling Gardens, New Cross, could continue for several weeks.

More than 100 people who attended services at the nearby Baptist Church in Cottesbrooke Street have been approached by police.

Last week officers put out an appeal for a man seen fleeing the scene. He is white, aged 30 to 40 and slim. He was wearing a light-coloured baseball cap, dark top, blue jeans and white trainers. The attack happened some time between 1am and 10pm on Sunday June 29.

Detectives also questioned a 21-year-old man, arrested on Saturday, over the murders. He was later released without charge.
