Man to face pensioner murder charge

A 22-year-old man is due to appear in court charged with murdering a pensioner.

He will appear before Newport Magistrates in South Wales in connection with the death of Gwen Poole.

The 66-year-old, from Llanbradach, near Caerphilly, was waiting for a lift from a friend before a night out when she was fatally wounded in an attack in her home village.

South Wales Police said the man charged with her murder is from the New Tredegar area.

Mrs Poole, a mother of two, died in hospital after suffering stab wounds to her chest, a post-mortem examination showed.

Her sister, Phyllis Sweet, said Mrs Poole was due to play skittles for the Llanbradach Social Club's women's skittle team on the evening of the incident.
