Ian Newtion, 45, from Fulham, died after sustaining an injury to his throat in an underpass in Greenford, west London, on Sunday morning.
Mr Newtion, also known by his stage name Scoobie Santino, was a reggae singer who had found fame in the 1990s.
The delivery driver was heading home after finishing a gig at a nearby club when he was attacked. He was found collapsed in a pool of blood by a member of the public at around 9am. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police, who described Mr Newtion as a kind and gentle man, said they had not yet found any motive for the attack.
His brother, Cleave, 55, said he was at a loss to explain why his younger sibling had been attacked.
Speaking just yards from the underpass, he said: "He was a very kind, mild-mannered, amiable and very amenable person, whose philosophy in life was to try to see the best in everyone. What is difficult is trying to imagine anything so violent happening to someone of Ian's personality."
Det Insp Lee Presland from the Met Police said forensic officers have recovered an "item of interest" from the scene and confirmed the object was not a knife.
Ruling out a gangland attack, he said police could not be sure at this stage if more than one person had attacked Mr Newtion.
Reggae singer Lloyd Brown posted a tribute on his MySpace site which read: "I would like to take this opportunity to send out my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Scoobie Santino. I had only met him once, at a show in Leicester many years ago, a very jovial and respectful man... May your soul rest in eternal peace, king."
