Peterborough City Council says it will charge superstores for the cost of collecting and storing abandoned trolleys.

Council chiefs hope that by imposing fines supermarkets will improve security.

"We believe that introducing a charging system will encourage supermarkets to either improve or maintain the security levels for their trolleys, or provide a better collection system," said a spokesman.

"Over the years abandoned trolleys have continued to be a problem and an annoyance to the city's residents.

"By introducing such a scheme in Peterborough we envisage footpaths, car parks and watercourses will not continue to be blighted by abandoned trolleys."
