McCann friends quizzed by police

Close friends of Madeleine McCanns' parents have vowed to do "anything" they can to help find her as they were called back in for interview by police in Portugal.

Three members of the party who were on holiday with the McCanns in May when Madeleine was snatched returned to a police station in the Algarve as detectives carried out a major review of evidence in the case.

Rachael Oldfield, 36, Dr Russell O'Brien, 36, and Dr Fiona Payne, 34, arrived at the headquarters of the Policia Judiciaria (PJ) in the regional capital Portimao to go over their accounts of the events of May 3. The interviews came as Robert Murat, the only person officially singled out as a suspect in the case, returned to the police station for a second day of questioning.

Expat Murat, 33, was called back to be reinterviewed on Tuesday almost two months after he was first named as a suspect by the PJ. It is understood several other people are to be questioned by detectives this week as part of a major review of evidence gathered so far.

But 69 days after she was snatched from her bed at her parents' holiday let in the village of Praia Da Luz, there is still no news of Madeleine's whereabouts. The McCanns were having dinner with a group of friends from the UK in a tapas restaurant opposite the apartment when the four-year-old was snatched.

Police have already interviewed the party in detail including one woman - whose identity has not been confirmed - who saw a girl being carried away by a man in Praia Da Luz. The McCanns are convinced it was Madeleine.

Speaking as the three arrived to be reinterviewed Mrs Oldfield said: "We are more than happy to help the police with their ongoing investigation. All of us want to do anything we can to help find Madeleine and reunite her with her loving parents. I know that Kate and Gerry are grateful to the Portuguese people for their prayers and tremendous support."

Dr Payne and her husband David, also a doctor, are among those who stayed on in the Algarve to support the McCanns for several weeks after the abduction.

Meanwhile Murat was seen entering the PJ headquarters at about 10.30am on Wednesday.

It is thought that among things he is being interviewed about is an email which reportedly mentions "the missing English girl".
