Men in court over prison stabbing

Two men serving sentences for the murder of Pc Sharon Beshenivsky have appeared in court charged with stabbing a fellow prisoner.

Muzzaker Imtiaz Shah, 26, and Yusuf Abdillh Jamma, 21, who shot the rookie officer during a bungled robbery in Bradford in November 2005, are accused of knifing murderer Tony Piggott.

Piggott, 22, who is serving life imprisonment for a nightclub shooting in Manchester four years ago, was attacked at high security Frankland Prison in County Durham in March.

Shah, from Kenton, north west London, and Jamma, of Small Heath, Birmingham, appeared separately via prison videolink for the hearing at North Durham Magistrates' Court in Peterlee.

They faced a joint charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

No pleas were entered and JPs transferred the case to Durham Crown Court for a hearing on September 12.

The defendants were granted technical unconditional bail but both remain in prison because they are serving minimum 35-year sentences for murdering Pc Beshenivsky.

The hearing was due to be held last week but had to be adjourned because of the strike by prison officers.
