Detectives discovered the print, made by a bare foot, during forensic examination of the bedroom of American Amanda Knox in the apartment she shared with Miss Kercher..
A police spokesman said it was still unclear whether the print was made by a man or a woman. It was found by using a special chemical which changes colour on contact with blood
It will now be compared to the three suspects and to other blood traces found in the apartment.
On Thursday it emerged that police had reportedly found DNA evidence that puts one of the suspects at the scene of the murder.
News agency Ansa said that the DNA of 23-year-old Raffaele Sollecito had been found on a piece of a bra belonging to Miss Kercher, who was murdered at her home in Perugia on the night of November 1 last year.
The agency said forensic experts found the material - believed to be a fastener - last month during a second search of the house on Via della Pergola where the 21-year-old from Coulsdon, Surrey, was found dead.
It had been cut from the bra with a knife and Sollecito's DNA was found close to the cut, the agency said.
Along with Knox, and Sollecito, Rudy Hermann Guede, 21, is in custody accused of sexually assaulting and murdering Miss Kercher.
All three deny involvement in the crime.
