Meredith: lawyers seek suspect talk

Lawyers for the latest suspect in British exchange student Meredith Kercher's murder hope to get the go-ahead to travel to Germany to meet their client.

Rudy Hermann Guede, 20, who has dual Ivorian and Italian nationality, was detained in Germany after Italian police issued an international arrest warrant for his capture.

Forensic tests revealed he had sex with Miss Kercher, 21, on the night she was killed, Italian police said.

Guede has admitted he was in Miss Kercher's house in Perugia on the night of the murder - but said an Italian man he did not know committed the crime.

His lawyers in Italy have made an urgent request to Perugia's prosecutor general, judge Claudia Matteini, for permission to fly to Germany to meet him.

One of his legal team, Vittorio Lombardo, said: "We are looking forward to speaking to him as we haven't done so yet.

"All we have dealt with so far is the extradition, and the sooner we get to speak to him the better."

They plan to travel to Germany with the suspect's father, Roger Guede, he said, adding: "We are ready to board the flight as soon as we get the go-ahead."

Guede's DNA matches that found on a tampon which indicated that Miss Kercher had what was described as "violent" sex when she died on the night of November 1, Italian police said. It also matched DNA found on toilet paper in the bathroom.

During a private conversation with a judge in Germany, leaked to Italian newspapers, he claimed he was in the bathroom when he heard Miss Kercher scream and then tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate her when he found her throat had been slit.
