One of the planes has come down in a field in rural Staffordshire, a police spokesman said, while the other made an emergency landing at East Midlands Airport after the collision.
A police spokesman said: "Staffordshire Police and emergency services are currently at the scene of an incident involving a light aircraft which has come down in a field in a rural part of Staffordshire... between Uttoxeter and Stafford. Collision investigators have been contacted."
All incoming flights were being diverted from East Midlands Airport in Leicestershire after the incident.
The second light aircraft made a forced landing at East Midlands Airport.
There were not thought to have been any serious injuries among the three people on board the small plane that landed at the airport.
"The incident involved a privately-owned light aircraft which performed an emergency landing at East Midlands Airport," said a spokeswoman.
"The airport is following its full emergency procedures and emergency personnel are on site."
The aircraft was not immediately thought to have been badly damaged and the three people on board were being checked over by medics, added the spokeswoman.
A spokesman for East Midlands Airport later confirmed the airport was fully reopened.
