Military to get cheaper council tax

Soldiers, sailors and airmen serving overseas are to get a rebate on their council tax bills, Defence Secretary Des Browne said.

Mr Browne said that the rebate, currently available to troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, would be extended to all Armed Forces personnel on operations overseas.

An additional 4,500 personnel will benefit from the scheme, which is worth around £140 for a six month tour of duty.

"I cannot commend enough the effort and commitment of our forces working abroad and away from their families, and this council tax rebate is another example of our commitment to provide the best welfare support for the Armed Forces and their families," Mr Browne said.

The locations covered in the extension of the scheme are Bahrain, Bosnia, the Falklands, Diego Garcia, Kosovo, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar.

Royal Navy personnel serving at sea and in receipt of the deployment welfare package and personnel deployed on UN operations will also be entitled to the rebate.
