Missing Briton found dead in Venice

A British tourist who vanished during a romantic Valentine's trip to Venice with his girlfriend has been found dead, the Foreign Office confirmed.

The body of Richard John Raynor, 23, from Doncaster, was discovered in Venice's lagoon.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We can confirm that sadly, the body found in Venice is that of the missing British national."

It is understood that Mr Raynor's father, William, who flew to Venice to search for his missing son, formally identified the body.

According to Italian reports from the ANSA news agency and Sky TG 24 TV, the body was discovered underneath a bridge connecting Venice lagoon to the mainland.

Mr Raynor went missing early on Thursday morning as the couple were making their way back to their hotel in the Mestre area of the city after a night out.

He vanished as his girlfriend was looking for a taxi.

She tried calling his mobile but it was switched off and later contacted police after Mr Raynor failed to return to their hotel.

An elderly couple later returned Mr Raynor's mobile, wallet and room key to the hotel. It is not known where the items were found.

Mr Raynor and his girlfriend had flown to the Italian city on Wednesday on a three-day Valentine's break.
