Mobile maker Nokia to axe jobs

British jobs will be cut under plans to shed 1,700 roles globally, mobile phone giant Nokia has confirmed.

The world's biggest maker of mobile handsets said the move will hit staff in sales and marketing, corporate development functions and product purchasing and management divisions.

The bulk of the cuts - 700 - will go in Finland, where the group has its headquarters, but the UK and US will also be significantly affected.

Nokia employs 3,200 staff in the UK, with its regional head office in Farnborough, Hampshire, and major sites in Bristol and London.

Nokia is currently consulting with unions over the planned job cuts and said it is too early to say how many staff will be impacted in each country.

But a spokeswoman said there is likely to be a "significant" number of staff affected in the UK.

In January, the firm announced plans to cut 700 million euros (£647 million) off the annual cost base in its key handset unit alone by the end of 2010 as it battles against sliding sales.

It reported a 20% plunge in fourth quarter sales and warned of a tough year ahead.

Nokia said it expects industry mobile handset sales to decline by around 10% this year - worse than previous estimates - and revised down its 2009 profit targets.

The group is now taking action to scale back sales and marketing to match the expected lower demand, streamlining its research and development and global support functions, while also cutting some duplicated roles following last year's acquisition of handset software firm Symbian.
