Mobile phone youth stabbed to death

A teenager was stabbed to death after trying to stop a gang stealing a friend's mobile phone, Scotland Yard said.

The 17-year-old, named by his family as Rizwan Darbar was attacked as he walked through West Ham Park in east London late on Sunday afternoon. He died at Newham General Hospital shortly before 7pm.

Police were called to the park at 5.35pm after receiving reports of a stabbing, Scotland Yard said.

The victim, who was Asian, was in the park with two friends when they were approached by an all-male gang who took a mobile from one of them. The victim stepped in and was stabbed, police said.

A post-mortem is being arranged and an inquest is expected to be opened shortly. A murder inquiry has been launched but no arrests have yet been made.

Speaking at the scene on Monday, Det Chief Insp Matt Horne said Rizwan had been listening to music on a mobile phone with two friends when they were approached by the gang.

He said: "They were approached by three black lads in their mid to late teens. The boys were listening to music on the phone and that was taken from them.

"At the instigation of one of the youths, the third stabbed the victim."

Mr Horne said the attack was "an unprovoked robbery with gratuitous violence that did not need to be there for the purpose of stealing the phones".

"Rizwan and his friends were doing nothing other than listening to music on the phone. They were reasonable lads doing nothing whatsoever," he said.
