Mohammed novel: three due in court

Three men are due in court over an alleged attack on the home of a publisher linked to a controversial novel about the prophet Mohammed.

They face charges in relation to a fire at the property in Lonsdale Square, Islington, north London, on September 27.

Unemployed Ali Beheshti, 40, phone salesman Abrar Mirza, 22, and mini-cab driver Abbas Taj, 30, are due at the Old Bailey.

Beheshti, of Tavistock Gardens, Ilford, Essex, Mirza, of Eastfield Road, Walthamstow, east London, and Taj, of Field Road, Forest Gate, east London, are alleged to have conspired to damage the property with intent to endanger life.

They also face an alternative charge of conspiracy to damage being reckless as to whether life would be endangered.

Beheshti is, in addition, accused of possessing a weapon designed for the discharge of a noxious liquid.

The address the men are alleged to have attacked is the home and workplace of Martin Rynja, director of the publishing house Gibson Square.

Gibson Square is handling the UK publication of The Jewel of Medina, by American author Sherry Jones, a book which has attracted protest from some Muslims.
