More Kenya holidays cancelled

More people are finding their sand-and-safari trip plans in ruins as UK travel companies cancel holidays to strife-torn Kenya up to and including Monday January 7.

The decision was taken by the Federation of Tour Operators (FTO) and extends by at least two days the Kenya ban, which had originally been imposed until the end of Saturday.

"Foreign Office advice against all but essential travel to Kenya is still in place and we thought it best to extend the cancellation dates," said FTO spokesman Graham Lancaster.

He added that Monday was a major return-home day for UK tourists in Kenya and that holiday airlines would be sending planes out to the East African country to bring people back.

Mr Lancaster went on: "About 500 people are affected by the cancellation of trips on Sunday and Monday. The FTO will be deciding over the weekend on holiday arrangements for the days after Monday."

British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Kenya Airways were carrying on UK-Kenya scheduled services as normal.

Tour chiefs met as more violence was feared in Kenya from riots that have so far claimed more than 300 lives following the disputed election that has seen President Mwai Kibaki declared the winner.
