A murder inquiry was launched after the bodies of Michelle Thomson, 25, and seven-year-old Ryan were found at their father's house in Buckhaven, near Kirkcaldy, on the east coast of Scotland.

Fife Constabulary said their father, Robert Thomson, 49, was receiving treatment for injuries at Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline.

It is understood he has been under police guard.

Chief Inspector Andy Morris said the deaths were a "terrible tragedy" and vowed to step up the number of community police officers to support family and residents of Buckhaven.

Officers have set up an incident room and appealed for anyone who may have been around the Percival Road and Methilhaven Road areas to contact them.
