More wild weather set to blow in

Forecasters predicted more wild weather in the coming week, with strong winds and the chance of snow showers.

The weekend saw gusts in parts of the UK reach more than 100mph, toppling trees and cutting off power lines.

Forecaster Brendan Jones, of Meteogroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said there was more bad weather to come.

He said: "Be prepared for lots of windy and unsettled weather - and there's a chance of snow. Despite the fact it's unsettled there's going to be some quite cold air. There is the potential for snow falls the further north it gets but even in the south."

The weather worsened overnight on Saturday, with north west Ireland and western parts of Scotland battening down the hatches under the strongest winds. Even in south west England gusts reached 80mph.

Mr Jones said: "Numerous areas of low pressure are coming in from the Atlantic and each one brings its own series of frontal systems with cloud and rain. In between you get temporary lulls.

"At the moment it looks as though the winds will be at their worst from Wednesday night to Thursday morning."

The south east escaped the worst of the weather on Sunday but much of the rest of the country suffered heavy showers and hail.

The strong winds continued in Scotland but eased off elsewhere.

High winds brought down power lines in Gloucestershire leaving 104 homes without electricity.
