Joshua Karney, 30, was arrested in Hove and taken in to custody.

South Yorkshire Police arrested Karney in Barnsley for being drunk and disorderly on November 24 last year, but realised he was a sex offender only after he was released.

Karney was convicted of a sex offence against a child in Lancashire in 2002 and jailed for 15 months but failed to report to a probation hostel when released on licence.

He is now one of the UK's five most wanted sex offenders.

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "Police from Brighton and Hove have arrested Joshua Karney, a man listed as one of the UK's most wanted sex offenders, following a proactive operation.

"Officers identified his whereabouts and just before 6pm he was arrested in a street in Hove.

"On his arrest, which was for recall to prison, he gave false details, but admitted his real identity as he was taken into custody."

Karney has appeared on the BBC's Crimewatch programme and is on the Child Exploitation and Online Protection's "most wanted" website.
