Mother detained after house siege

A mother of two has been detained under the Mental Health Act after armed police stormed a house to end a 29-hour siege.

Police said the woman - a Zimbabwean - was arrested at her home in Cambridge in the early hours on suspicion of making threats to kill.

Three boys staying at the house were being cared for by social workers.

A senior officer said police fired a taser at the 27-year-old woman after barging in through a side door.

He said officers suspected that the woman was armed but no weapons were found.

Police said they were alerted late on Thursday. Armed officers surrounded the house and negotiators talked to the woman who had concerns about "immigration issues".

A 10-year-old boy - the woman's nephew - left the house on Friday.

And police moved in at about 1 30am when the woman's sons - aged one and two - were sleeping in a bedroom.

They said the woman and undergone a medical examination after being hit by the taser and was now being assessed by psychiatrists.
