Mother held as children escape fire

A 36-year-old woman has been arrested after firefighters rescued her six children from a blaze.

The youngsters, aged from eight months to 11 years, were rescued after flames and smoke engulfed their home in Yasmin Gardens, Oldham, Greater Manchester, just before 10pm on Tuesday night.

They were treated by paramedics at the scene and then taken to hospital by ambulance but later discharged.

The blaze began after a pan was left unattended on a cooker and caught fire, according to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

It is believed the children were alone in the house when the fire broke out.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to extinguish the flames.

The woman was held on suspicion of child neglect by Greater Manchester Police.
