Joanne Coombs' body was found on a rail line at Manningtree, Essex, late on Tuesday - 13 miles from her home in Dovercourt, Essex.
Her only child, Natasha, was found dead near the same spot on August 10, two weeks after vanishing.
Sources close to the inquiry said Mrs Coombs' husband Gary had been near the scene of the latest tragedy at the same time as emergency services staff. It is thought he may have become concerned after she left the house and gone to Manningtree.
Police said Natasha, who disappeared after a night out in Ipswich, Suffolk, had been hit by a train. They are not sure whether her death was an accident or suicide.
Natasha, a clerical assistant, had been upset about breaking up with boyfriend Josh Brennan, 18. One theory is that she had been making her way along rail tracks to his home in Lawford, Essex, when she was hit.
Police said Natasha's mother was also hit by a train.
Mrs Coombs had said life without her daughter was "unbearable". But a relative questioned whether Mrs Coombs had intended to kill herself.
Mrs Coombs' aunt, Lillian Clackett, 55, of Dovercourt, added: "She probably went there to try to piece it together. I don't think she had fully taken in what had happened."
Prayers were said for Mrs Coombs' husband, 48, at a church near the family home. Mr Coombs, a manager with insurance firm Norwich Union, also paid a separate visit to a church.
