Mother wants Scarlett tests in UK

The mother of a teenage girl raped and murdered on a beach in Goa said she wanted further forensic tests on her daughter's body when it is flown back to Britain next week.

The semi-naked body of Scarlett Keeling, 15, was found on the beach at Anjuna, Goa, on February 19.

The teenager, from north Devon, was on holiday there with her family, who were travelling elsewhere in the region when she was killed.

Her mother Fiona MacKeown, 43, said she would be flying from Mumbai to Heathrow on Monday on the same flight as Scarlett's coffin.

Once Scarlett's body was back in Britain she would arrange her own forensic examination. "I am not happy with the forensics here. I want to know how many men raped her," she said. "I am pretty certain she was attacked by more than one person."

The funeral of Scarlett could be held within the next three weeks, her mother said.

Ms MacKeown said she still wanted to bury her daughter on her land near Bideford in north Devon. "It will take some time to organise the funeral, and find out whether there are any restrictions or not," she said.

Ms MacKeown said once her daughter is buried she wanted to return to Goa. However, she did not know whether her visa would be stopped, adding: "I will do my best to get over here, or carry on the fight from England."

Scarlett's death is to be examined by a member of the Indian National Commission for Women, Ms MacKeown's lawyer Vikram Varma said. The New Delhi-based organisation deals with issues including rape, and promotes and protects the interests of women in India.

Ms MacKeown has made allegations that links between police officials, politicians and the drugs mafia were continuing to hamper a proper investigation into her daughter's death.
