Mother's plea to missing daughter
21 January 2008
Shannon Matthews, from Moorside Road, Dewsbury Moor, Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, was reported missing hours after failing to return home from school on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said around 200 officers, from across the West Yorkshire area, were helping with the search to trace the little girl.
Speaking for the first time outside her home, Shannon's mother Karen said: "Shannon, you are a princess in every way, come home."
Mrs Matthews said this was the first time Shannon had disappeared and reassured her that she did not need to worry about returning.
"Shannon, you are not in trouble, darling, please come home," she said.
"This is the first time Shannon you've done it, we don't know why baby, but we love you."
Describing her daughter, Mrs Matthews said: "She is loving, caring in every way possible, you could not wish for a better child."
West Yorkshire police said they were continuing their efforts to find Shannon after having extensively searched the area where she was last seen, and the areas around her home and school.
Police said the last confirmed sighting was at her school - West Moor Junior School - at 3.10pm, although there had been other, unconfirmed, sightings at around 7.30pm.
