Motorists risk driving over limits

Almost half of motorists are willing to drive even though they may be over the limit from the night before, a new poll suggests.

A survey of 4,000 adults found many were happy to risk a ban by getting behind the wheel the morning after a night out drinking. More than 80% were also unclear what Britain's drink drive limit was.

Almost half (45%) said they drove while knowingly near or over the limit and 10% believed they were safe to drive when twice over the limit.

Men were more likely to drink and drive than women, according to the poll.

Jools Townsend, head of education for the road safety charity Brake, said: "Many more people are likely to drink drive over Christmas and the New Year.

"Even small amounts of alcohol affect drivers' reaction times, judgment and co-ordination.

"There's no way of knowing exactly how long it takes to sober up completely after drinking, but it's probably longer than you think."

The current UK alcohol limit for driving is 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The Government does not translate that into units of alcohol because factors like a person's size, their metabolism and the strength of the drink come into play.

The drink drive limit is 50mg per 100ml of blood in many other European countries including France and Germany and 20mg in Poland, Sweden and Norway.

The latest survey was carried out for AlcoSense - a mobile phone-sized breathalyser for consumers to buy.
