MP seeking legal advice over claims

Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik has said he is to take legal advice following revelations concerning his private life.

Mr Opik's former partner, ITV weather presenter Sian Lloyd, made a number of allegations surrounding the couple's relationship in the Mail on Sunday newspaper.

But Mr Opik, Liberal Democrat spokesman for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, said parts of the article "may be illegal".

He told Sky News' Sunday Live with Adam Boulton that he was taking legal advice regarding the contents of the article.

Mr Boulton asked Mr Opik: "The Mail on Sunday has got unflattering stories about you from your former fiance ..."

Mr Opik cut in: "I can't talk about that because we are taking legal advice about that at the moment, I'm afraid."

Asked if he was considering suing, Mr Opik replied: "I can't say more about that at the moment, but there are some things that may be illegal about that article."

Montgomeryshire MP Mr Opik, 43, and Ms Lloyd, 49, announced their engagement in 2004 and had been together for four years before their relationship ended.

Mr Opik is currently dating Gabriela Irimia, 25, one half of Romanian pop duo The Cheeky Girls.
