MPs angry over expenses legal move

Commons Speaker Michael Martin has faced a backlash from MPs over the decision to challenge the disclosure of their expenses in the High Court.

Mr Martin moved to shut down debate about the issue in the House as MPs distanced themselves from the move and demanded to know why there had been no prior debate.

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg insisted any more delay to the publication of their second homes allowance claims would only damage MPs' reputations further.

The costly appeal - against an Information Tribunal ruling that the Commons must publish details of 14 MPs' Additional Costs Allowance - was lodged on Tuesday.

The Commons Commission, which manages House affairs, cited the security implications of publishing details of their second home addresses.

But Mr Clegg insisted the Commons could release the expenses claims immediately while withholding the addresses pending the High Court fight.

"There are legitimate grounds for appealing the decision to publish private addresses," he said.

"However, there is no earthly reason why the rest of the information should not be published immediately. Any delay will only add to the British public's distrust in their politicians."

Tory leader David Cameron, whose expenses are covered by the ruling, was also said to be hoping for a "speedy resolution".

The legal challenge is expected to cost more than £100,000 - on top of the £52,000 the Commons has already spent opposing freedom of information rulings.
