MPs barred from standing for Labour

Four Labour MPs caught up in the Westminster expenses scandal have been formally barred from standing for the party at the next general election.

But the four - three of whom had already announced they would stand down - have not been expelled from the party by Labour's "star chamber" panel or had the whip removed.

A Labour Party spokesman said David Chaytor, Ian Gibson, Margaret Moran and Elliot Morley had lost their endorsement as Labour candidates.

He added: "They will not be able to stand as Labour candidates in any constituency at the next general election.

"The organisation committee of the Labour Party's NEC agreed with the panel's recommendations and new prospective parliamentary candidates will be selected to join Labour's hardworking councillors in Bury, Norwich, Scunthorpe and Luton.

"As both Gordon Brown and the National Executive Committee have made clear, the Labour Party demands the very highest standard of its MPs. The special NEC endorsements panel will continue to consider cases referred to it by the Chief Whip or the Labour Party's general secretary."

Mr Gibson was the only one of the four who had not announced he would step down.
