MPs' warning over Baby P appeal

Opposition politicians have warned that there should be no "reward for failure" after the children's services boss who lost her job over Baby P's death launched an appeal against her sacking.

Sharon Shoesmith, 55, was dismissed without compensation from her senior position at Haringey Council in north London last month after a damning report into her department's failings.

It emerged that she is appealing against the local authority's decision to sack her - and reportedly could be in line for a payout of up to £173,000.

Robert Gorrie, leader of Haringey's Liberal Democrat opposition, said local residents would be "rightly outraged" if the council agreed to a large pay-off.

"We have said from the outset that those responsible for this tragedy should be held to account and that there should be no rewards for failure," he said.

"Sharon Shoesmith was responsible for the council service that failed Baby P. I hope the original council decision to terminate employment without payment of notice is upheld."

Shadow children's secretary Michael Gove echoed his words, saying: "There should be no reward for failure in either the public or private sector. Rather than compensating the individuals who presided over this tragedy, we should be pursuing those still being paid by the taxpayer who share responsibility for what went wrong."

Children's Secretary Ed Balls sent inspectors into Haringey Council after the trial of those responsible for 17-month-old Baby P's brutal death.

The little boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, died in a blood-splattered cot in August 2007. He had suffered more than 50 injuries at the hands of his mother, her boyfriend and their lodger despite being on the child protection register and receiving 60 contacts with the authorities over eight months.

The inspectors identified a string of "serious concerns" about Haringey's child protection services, which they described as "inadequate".
