Murat's mother speaks out

The mother of Robert Murat has spoken publicly for the first time to deny claims her son could have been involved in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

Jenny Murat told the BBC's Panorama programme that Mr Murat, who remains a suspect in the case, was with her throughout the evening of May 3 when Madeleine disappeared from her family's holiday apartment.

Mrs Murat accused three friends of Gerry and Kate McCann, who are understood to believe they saw Mr Murat on the night of May 3, of lying.

Russell O'Brien, Rachael Oldfield and Fiona Payne reportedly believe they saw Mr Murat near the Ocean Club complex after the alarm had been raised. But Mrs Murat said her son spent the entire evening with her and never left their home.

She said: "I just don't know why they are lying.

"On May the third I'd been out taking the dogs out, which I do every single night of my life. And I got home about 8 o'clock and Robert was already there and he was in all of the evening.

"We were sitting in the kitchen talking the whole evening. I would definitely have known if he'd gone out."

Gerry McCann's sister, Philomena McCann, told the programme of hearing Kate McCann "screaming" during a conversation with her lawyer shortly before she was named a suspect in her daughter's disappearance.

Panorama said the conversation took place when the lawyer arrived at the couple's apartment in Portugal following police interviews with Mrs McCann.

Panorama: The Mystery Of Madeleine McCann will screen on BBC One at 9pm on Monday.
