Officers were called to Atlantic Road in Brixton, south London, at 7.40pm on Saturday to reports of three men stabbed in a market place.
One man, believed to be in his mid-20s, died at the scene and two other men, whose ages are not known, were treated for facial injuries at Kings College Hospital and discharged.
Police believe the stabbings followed a row between a group of black men and the victims, who were all of Middle Eastern appearance, at a greengrocer in Atlantic Road shortly before 7.30pm.
It is not yet known how many suspects there are and police are not yet able to give their ages or descriptions.
Atlantic Road and Popes Road have been closed while a forensic examination is carried out. A post-mortem examination has yet to be arranged.
Police are keeping an open mind about the motive. The investigation is being led by Det Chief Insp Mick Duthie from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command.
Officers appealed for anyone who saw the incident or a groups of black men running away from the area to come forward.
