The woman, who suffered horrific burns, knocked on a house in St Helens, Merseyside, begging for help.
It is thought the woman, who was in her early 20s, may have been set alight using an accelerant.
Paramedics were called to Blindfoot Lane in the semi-rural Rainford area just after 9pm on Monday. The badly-burnt woman was taken to Whiston Hospital where she later died.
Police said they have launched a murder inquiry and are trying to establish who the woman was.
A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "The woman was discovered in the Rainford area just after 9pm suffering from serious burns.
"She was taken to hospital where she later died from her injuries.
"Police are treating her death as suspicious and a murder inquiry has been launched.
"House to house inquiries are currently under way in the area and police are working to establish the identity of the woman."
A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service said they were called to a residential address at 8.50pm and took a woman, in her early 20s, to Whiston Hospital with serious injuries.
