The girl's body was discovered in the lorry, which was parked at the side of the A605 near Warmington, Northamptonshire.
A man's body was found hanged in woodland close to where the lorry was parked, Northamptonshire Police added.
A statement released by the force said: "Neither the girl nor the man can be named at this stage as all family members have not been informed but we can say they are not local to Northamptonshire.
"We can also say that the man was the partner of the girl's mother.
"It is believed there are no suspicious circumstances in relation to the man's death but police are have not completely ruled out the involvement of a third party."
Detective Chief Inspector Tricia Kirk, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are investigating the murder of a young girl and the death of a man who was known to her.
"While we have not at this stage ruled out the possible involvement of a third party, the evidence strongly suggests that it is unlikely that anyone else is involved in the two deaths.
"This is a tragic incident for two families and we are working closely with them as part of our investigation.
"I am keen to establish the movement of the Spar lorry, to ascertain what route it took through the Midlands and the county and when it parked by the side of the A605."
