Murdered students are named

Two French students stabbed to death in a south-east London flat that was then set on fire have been named.

French media reports said the victims were Laurent Bonomo and his friend Gabriel Ferez, both aged 22.

The two men were studying bio-engineering at Imperial College London and the University of Clermont-Ferrand.

Parents of the two students were expected to address a press conference at New Scotland Yard.

Detectives launched a murder inquiry after they were found dead with multiple stab wounds after the flat fire in Sterling Gardens, New Cross, on Sunday night.

Police refused to confirm reports that the men had been bound and the fire ignited by firebombs thrown through windows of the ground-floor property.

Emergency services were called to the flat by neighbours at about 10pm. One neighbour reportedly heard a small explosion.

Detective Chief Inspector Mick Duthie said: "I am appealing for anyone who was in the area of Sterling Gardens at any time over the weekend, and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious near the address, to get in touch.

"I am particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anyone near the premises around 9.30pm on Sunday."
