Murray beginning quest for gold

10 January 2008
Murray and his doubles partner, brother Jamie, might have felt they were back at Wimbledon as rain interrupted the start of the day's play.
The focus returned to sport after events away from the arenas had overshadowed the first day of competition.
A tourist with close links to the US Olympic team was murdered on Saturday and a protest in the Chinese capital sparked ugly scenes.
But American swimmer Michael Phelps got the second day of competition off to a flying start in Beijing's spectacular Water Cube by smashing his own world record by more than a second to win the first event in his quest for a record eight Olympic gold medals.
Phelps touched the wall in 4 minutes 03.84 seconds, 1.41 seconds under his old mark to take his first goal and win the 400 metres Individual Medley.
It came a day after Todd Bachman, father of 2004 volleyball Olympian Elisabeth Bachman, was killed and his wife Barbara seriously injured following the attack at a popular Beijing tourist site.
The Bachmans were attacked by a lone assailant while visiting the Drum Tower near the Forbidden City.
The attacker, named by the official Xinhua News Agency as Tang Yongming, 47, reportedly killed himself by jumping from the 13th-century tower.
The International Olympic Committee released a statement in which they expressed their condolences to the Bachman family.
