The Scottish firebrand held his nerve to beat world No 1 Rafael Nadal 6-2 7-6 4-6 6-4.
He will meet Roger Federer in the final on Monday night.
The victory gives Britain its first Grand Slam finalist for more than a decade and keeps celebrations going after Team GB's heroics during the Olympics.
After the victory he launched into his trademark celebration by showing his biceps.
Reacting to the biggest match of his short career he said rain which forced the game to be delayed on Saturday was "really difficult".
The 21-year-old Scot was leading top seed Rafael Nadal two sets to love in the US Open semi-final when play was halted.
But his brilliant form did not waver at the restart on Sunday as he held his nerve - despite losing a set - to triumph at a windswept National Tennis Centre, New York.
He added: "We changed courts and it was windy but I was really happy I did it in the end.
"I just had to hang in there. I'm going to have to play great if I'm going to win now."
