M-way accident man fights for life
25 January 2007
The man was knocked down on the hard shoulder of the M23 southbound between junctions eight and nine in Surrey near Gatwick airport on Monday afternoon.
He was taken by air ambulance to hospital. Two lanes southbound and one lane leading north were closed but later reopened.
The injured man, believed to be in his 60s, is in East Surrey Hospital.
Police have taken the unusual step of releasing the registration number of a vehicle involved in the collision which they believe failed to stop at the scene.
They want to speak to the driver of a white Mercedes Atego box van registration number KE04 ECF.
A Surrey Police spokesman said the driver was advised to go to a police station.
The spokesman said emergency services were obstructed by some motorists who abandoned their vehicles on the hard shoulder and began walking towards Gatwick Airport with their suitcases.
Witnesses and anyone with information about the Mercedes van are asked to call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222.
