New appeal over M40 biker shooting

Detectives hunting the killer of a Hell's Angel gunned down on the M40 have renewed appeals for information after releasing CCTV footage of the biker filmed just minutes before his death.

The images show Gerry Tobin at a petrol station shortly before he was shot in the back of the head as he rode home from the Bulldog Bash bikers' festival in Warwickshire on August 12.

The 35-year-old appears relaxed in the video, even stopping to smile at the camera, leading police to believe he had no idea he was about to be killed.

Detective Superintendent Ken Lawrence, who is heading the investigation, said the priority now was to establish a motive for Mr Tobin's murder.

He called on Hell's Angels to co-operate more fully with the police, saying: "I'm concerned that the Hell's Angels are not coming forward and sharing what information they have with me.

"I'm sure they will have theories about Mr Tobin's death and I'm asking them to share those with the police. I would like to enter into a meaningful dialogue with them but they are reluctant to do that."

The murder has prompted fears of a violent feud erupting between rival motorcycle gangs, but Mr Lawrence urged bikers not to take the law into their own hands.

An examination of Mr Tobin's Harley Davidson has confirmed that a second shot fired in the attack hit the motorbike.

Mr Lawrence said he was "content" that the shots were fired from a dark green Rover 620 which was seen passing Mr Tobin at the time of the murder.

Motorists reported seeing the car driving off at great speed immediately after the attack, and officers are now studying hours of CCTV footage, including images of the Rover.
