No services as Eurostar misery continues

Misery for Eurostar passengers looks set to continue after the operator said that it "had no expectation" of resuming services.

Thousands of travellers were stranded after a fire broke out in the Channel Tunnel, causing the suspension of all rail services on the undersea route.

Six people suffered minor injuries and dozens needed to be evacuated from the tunnel after the blaze, which started on a lorry on board a freight train travelling from Folkestone to Calais.

In a statement, the operator said: "Eurostar does not expect to operate any services between the UK and the continent."

The fire was detected shortly before 3pm on Thursday nearly seven miles from the French entrance.

In the evacuation, 32 people - including seven British nationals - were led to safety through a service tunnel. All those injured were treated for smoke inhalation.

Some concern had been raised over the proximity of flames to a lorry transporting the toxic chemical phenol.

French authorities confirmed that there had been a vehicle containing around 100kg of phenol - also known as carbolic acid - close to the site on fire.

But a spokesman for Arras police said that it did not make the situation any more dangerous.

The incident brought back unwelcome memories of 1996 when the tunnel was badly damaged by a major blaze after a shuttle train carrying lorries caught fire. That fire burned for over five hours, wrecking the concrete lining and facilities over about half a mile of tunnel and causing £200 million worth of damage.
