Numbers of Polish students soar

Soaring numbers of students from eastern Europe are travelling to Britain to go to university while the number of UK undergraduates is set to fall, figures showed.

The number of Polish students studying in British institutions rose by 56% to 6,770 between 2006 and 2007.

This meant there were more students from Poland than from Spain or Italy in Britain, the Higher Education Statistics Agency said.

There were also dramatic rises in students from Lithuania and Latvia.

The results came as a report from vice-chancellors warned population changes would see the equivalent of 70,000 fewer full-time British undergraduates over the next 10 years.

The rest of the EU is expected to see an even greater downturn in 18 to 20-year-olds - around 40% in some countries, the Universities UK study found.

Sir Muir Russell, vice-president of Universities UK and chair of the report's steering group, said: "This isn't the first time the sector has faced such a significant change in the make-up of its student population.

"We'll need to work closely with policy makers to ensure that the sector adjusts well.

"Our universities are in an excellent position to prepare for such fluctuations, but it is crucial that future Government policy takes these demographic projections into account.

"We expect to see an increase in international students over this period and we must ensure the UK remains an attractive destination for them."
